Vocabulary: Week 2

Great job last Friday on the vocabulary game! Congratulations to Mackenzie for getting the most words correct! I hope you all had fun and are getting prepared for this Friday!

It is time for chapters 3-6 vocabulary. Just like last week, you are required to post 1 new vocabulary word this week. We will follow the same format as last week. Make sure that you read what others have posted to avoid duplicate entries. Use what you have learned about Internet search to find an Internet dictionary to look up the words. If you need reminders on how to do this, refer to the post on Tuesday, April 8.

Make sure you read through and know your classmates posts before Friday! :)

Chapter 2

Upon awaking the one morning, Meg wonders whether the irrational events of the previous night were merely a dream, but her mother assures her by saying "you don't have to understand things for them to be."

What do you think this means?

Please post your response by Friday, April 17. Don't forget to read and comment on 1 of your classmates posts as well! Do you agree or disagree with what your classmates are thinking? We will discuss this in class on Friday.

Vocabulary: Week 1

We're discovering that there are some tricky vocabulary in our literature circle book, A Wrinkle in Time, along with some unique characters! Here you can post challenging, new, or unusual words you find in the text (along with page number, dictionary definition, and a sentence that you create that uses the vocabulary word) to help us all understand the story better. Make sure that you read what others have posted to avoid duplicate entries. Use what you have learned about Internet search to find an Internet dictionary to look up the words. If you need reminders on how to do this, refer to the post on Tuesday, April 8.

Here is an example post by Ms. Szymczak:

word: isolated (p.3)
Dictionary definition: separated from other persons or things, alone
(from http://dictionary.reference.com)
Sentence: Mary felt isolated on the tropical island in the middle of the ocean.

You are required to post 1 new vocabulary word each week. Make sure you read through and know your classmates posts because on Friday, we will play a fun vocabulary game with the words posted! There will be prizes for winners! :)

Pre-Reading Activity

Use what you learned from the Internet search lesson to search for the various "A Wrinkle in Time" book covers.

"A Wrinkle in Time" has had many different book covers over the years. Based on what you see in the covers, what do you think this book will be about? Be sure to post the cover you found and explain what makes you think that way. Comment on at least one of your classmates posts. Feel free to flip through the pages of your book to also look at the pictures to get a better idea of what the book might be about.

Please post your responses by Thursday, April 10. We will talk about the different responses in class on Thursday.

Internet search lesson

Throughout this unit, I will be asking you to do a little researching on your own using Internet search strategies. I modeled how to do this in class today. Please look through the Google tutorial if you forget how to do this:

If you have any questions, please post them as a comment to this post and I will answer them shortly!
